A new European project by Aosta Valley for the GEO Surveyor 2.0

In 2018 KRIA found the perfect opportunity to develop the new GEO Surveyor 2.0: the call for participation at the Smart Specialization Strategy – S3 of Aosta Valley.

Thanks to the bid, we are accelerating in the research and development of the new GEO Surveyor 2.0. The final product will be very small, easy to install and easy to use.

The idea of “What you see is what you get” remains the same: thanks to the optical technology of GEO Surveyor, the outputs are immediate to interpretate!

GEO Surveyor for Planpincieux monitoring

In September 2019, Planpincieux glacier started to accelerate his descending motion. The glacier is located under the famous Grande Jorasses, Mont Blanc massif, and in this momenti, its front is on a big slope change.  The high temperatures, recorded also in the mountain areas, encouraged the acceleration of the ice mass. There aren’t houses and people in danger, but the local street of the Val Ferret does.

Our technicians installed a GEO Surveyor system, for the continuous monitoring of the front of the glacier, in combination with a radar system developed by an other company.

Here the video of the installation, by LocalTeam

In addiction, this site is perfect in order to test the new functions of GEO Surveyor, that is able to generate motion maps on the image plane. This is made by the continuous comparison of the HD images taken by the system:

Brenva test site and GEO Surveyor 2.0

Due to the positive response of the first GEO Surveyor, installed for the La Saxe rockfall monitoring, KRIA continued to develop the product. The new version of the GEO Surveyor is compact, autonomous and easy to install.

The italian face of Mont Blanc was the test site for the new GEO Surveyor. Here the device is monitoring a slope very far: 6,5 km from the device to the target. This is very interesting as a test-site, providing useful data to the KRIA R&D compartment.

Brenva rockfall correctly followed by GEO Surveyor algorithms at 6.5 km from the target

Despite the difficulties of the miniaturization, the Brenva test-site confirmed that this is the right direction!

In 2019, KRIA participated in the call for tenders “S3 – Smart Specialization Strategy, and the R&D compartment started to develop the official miniaturized version, with the novelty of a solar and wind energy kit, in addiction to new mechanical parts and software.

The first GEO Surveyor 2.0 is installed in Fontainemore (AO), in order to monitor the rockfall on the slope of Pic the Molèr.
