MONTUR – Real-time monitoring and forecasting of tourist flows in the Aosta Valley through distributed sensors and machine learning and big data tools

Project Description.

Kria S.r.l is the project leader in response to the Call for Proposals “R&D Aggregations” promoted by the Economic Development, Training and Labor Department of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta, which aims to create a system for monitoring and forecasting (SMP) of tourist flows in Valle d’Aosta, providing real-time information and accurate forecasts of arrivals and presence in the Aosta Valley territory.

The use of cameras and sensors (already present in the area and newly installed) with absolute respect for privacy allows for anonymized data streams with a density of information having a far greater scope than the official statistics currently available.

Through the use of machine learning tools and big data, it is possible to measure the numerosity (people counting) and classify visitors according to their characteristics and habits (group composition, length of stay, travel times, destinations); combining this information with weather and historical data provides an accurate forecast of arrivals and presence in the Aosta Valley area.

The introduction of new devices enables improved monitoring quality and forecast accuracy even at the individual valley level.

Objectives and expected results

The objectives and results to be achieved (over the project period: April 2022 – October 2023) are as follows:

  1. Realization of a tool that (in the hands of) public and private entities, such as the restaurant, hotel and ski resort sectors, can obtain a more accurate forecast of inflows and outflows.
  2. Realization of a product that can meet the following market demands:
  • forecasts on arrivals/attendance in Aosta Valley, ad hoc analysis of impact of events, events;
  • Implementation of a visitor behavior analysis and visitor segmentation and profiling;
  • creation of a product that can help to implement or evaluate by public and private enterprises, the use of variable economic policies, in the specific through the application of variable prices based on the forecast of demand by the end consumer to derive maximum profit.
